National Eating Disorders Awareness Week: Raising Awareness & Support

Haven of Hope Eating Disorder Care Center

February 20, 2025

Every year, National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW) serves as a crucial time to shed light on the realities of eating disorders, challenge stigma, and promote healing. Taking place in the last week of February, NEDAW is dedicated to education, advocacy, and fostering a supportive community for those affected by eating disorders. At Haven of Hope Eating Disorder Care Center, we stand with individuals and families navigating these challenges and emphasize the importance of compassionate, specialized treatment.

Understanding National Eating Disorders Awareness Week

NEDAW is an initiative led by organizations like the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) to spread awareness about eating disorders, highlight the importance of early intervention, and ensure that those struggling know they are not alone. The week is filled with educational events, online campaigns, and community activities aimed at increasing knowledge about eating disorders, their impact, and the resources available for recovery.

Why Awareness Matters

Eating disorders affect millions of individuals across all backgrounds, yet they remain widely misunderstood. Conditions such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) are not simply about food or weight—they are complex mental health conditions that require professional treatment. By raising awareness, we can help dismantle harmful stereotypes, encourage open conversations, and ensure those in need receive timely and effective care.

Our Commitment to Healing & Recovery

At Haven of Hope Eating Disorder Care Center, we specialize in providing compassionate, evidence-based residential treatment for adult women (18+) who struggle with eating disorders. Our unique residential program offers around-the-clock care in a safe and supportive environment.

We are proud to be the only eating disorder treatment program in the world that is based on the Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach. IFS explores and respects all parts that make up a human’s individuality and understands parts get into extreme roles, such as eating disorders, for good reason with positive intent underneath the destructive method used. Rather than rejecting this part of themselves, our goal is to help individuals relate to their parts in a way that allows for transformation and long-term healing.

We offer specialized care for:

  • Anorexia Nervosa – Characterized by severe food restriction, intense fear of weight gain, and distorted body image.
  • Bulimia Nervosa – Involves cycles of binge eating followed by purging behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, or laxative use.
  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED) – Marked by episodes of uncontrollable eating, often accompanied by feelings of guilt and distress.
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) – Involves an avoidance of certain foods due to sensory sensitivities, fear of choking, or a lack of interest in eating, which can lead to severe nutritional deficiencies.

How You Can Participate in NEDAW

Whether you are personally affected by an eating disorder or want to support the cause, there are many ways to participate in NEDAW:

  • Educate Yourself & Others – Learn about eating disorders and share resources to help break down stigma.
  • Engage on Social Media – Use NEDAW hashtags, share stories of recovery, and spread awareness online.
  • Attend Local or Virtual Events – Look for panel discussions, webinars, or community gatherings focused on eating disorder education and support.
  • Support Those in Recovery – Offer kindness, encouragement, and a listening ear to friends, family, or colleagues who may be struggling.
